Internet Explorer, including the latest IE8 betas and the existing stable IE7, are still losing market share to its "alternative" competitors. Microsoft has been eager to push IE7 and more recently IE8, trying to convince people to use the beta browser in an obvious attempt to keep their dominance from slipping further.
Internet Explorer dropped by a percent and a half (from 71.27 percent to 69.77) While Firefox jumped by 0.81 percent (from 19.97 percent to 20.78 percent). Safari rebounded 0.56 percent (from 6.57 percent to 7.13 percent). Opera and Chrome switched spots again: the former dropped 0.04 percent (0.75 Percent to 0.71) Whiles the latter gained 0.09 percent (from 0.74 percent to 0.83 percent).
Historically, malware attacks that target a single browser are aimed at Internet Explorer, but at least one badware author has decided to go after a smaller market. Say hello to the first Trojan specifically designed to ensnare Firefox users and those curious about Greasemonkey.
An add-on for the Firefox browser called 'Pirates of the Amazon' adds links on the Amazon store directly to torrents on ThePirateBay. The extension works for CDs, DVDs, games, books and basically all products that can be converted to a digital format.
The (for-now) non-profit Mozilla Foundation released its financial statements for 2007 (embedded below). Revenues for the organization behind the open-source Firefox browser were up 12 percent to $75 million, with search-related royalties from Google accounting for 88 percent of the total, or $66 million. (Another $2 million or so came from other search engines).
HP is including a sandboxed version of Firefox to assist in malware mitigation. Using Symantec's virtualization system, the browser can be restored to a default installation point at any time.
